This Peruvian baby alpaca garment is handmade with sticks and macramé by women artisans. In Peru, the main alpaca fiber-producing regions are Puno, Cusco, Arequipa, Huancavelica, Apurimac and Ayacucho, located 3800 meters above sea level.

About the alpaca and its fine fiber

This specie of camelid is originally from South America and its weight varies between 60 and 70 kilograms. Many markets highly demand its fiber because it is one of the finest in the world, surpassing the quality of cashmere and sheep's wool.

This fiber is used to make garments such as pullovers, sweaters, skirts, coats, and accessories such as handbags, wallets and belts, and even tapestries and carpets.

According to information from the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), Peru has more than 3 million 600 thousand alpacas, which represent 87% of the world's population. Peru is also the world's leading producer of alpaca fiber.
