Alpaca: types and importance
The alpaca is a camelid domesticated in Peru for thousands of years. It has two species: suri and huacaya. The latter is the most abundant in Peru, reaching 80% of the total. The regions where they grow are Puno, Ayacucho, Cusco, Arequipa and Huancavelica, in places that exceed 3500 meters above sea level.
One of the reasons why the alpaca is in great demand in international markets is because of its fiber, which is considered one of the finest in the world. It can be used to make a variety of garments, as well as handbags and even carpets.
FAO highlights the importance of this camelid, indicating that "the alpaca is a guarantor of food and nutritional security for family farmers in the high Andean areas of Peru".
