The integration of astronomical knowledge into the Inca system of government raises questions about the foundations of imperial social systems: is there a relationship between the development of the state and the emergence of complex astronomical systems; why should astronomy, among all human activities, serve as a focus around which to organize social activities; what institutions are supported by astronomical knowledge and how do they promote the development of astronomy? We will explore these questions in the context of Inca society and the astronomical practices carried out in its capital city.
